College: “Make America Great Again” is “overt white supremacy”

President Trump's campaign slogan “Make America Great Again," cultural appropriation, and Columbus Day celebrations are examples of white supremacy according to San Diego City College.

The event: The university's co-directors of the World Cultures program, professors Michelle Chan and Maria-Jose Zeledon-Perez, hosted an event earlier this month, titled “Confronting White Supremacy through the Arts."

“Come join us in confronting White Supremacy through students’ performances. Prior to the performances, guest speakers will set the stage and contextualize what white supremacy is, its areas of activity, and how rampant it is in our society, curriculum, mindsets, and media," read a flyer promoting the event, obtained by Campus Reform.

The fliers: In addition to the talks and performances, attendees were given fliers about white supremacy that placed what they described as white supremacist behavior in different categories. A "pyramid of white supremacy," ranked various actions on a scale of "socially acceptable" to "socially unacceptable." Saying things like "Make America Great Again," approving of racist mascots, and "assuming that good intentions are enough" were listed as "covert white supremacy.

A third flier had a wheel chart that tied white supremacy to various fields, such as economics and religion.

An attendee's take: SDCC sophomore Daimeon Rodriguez said that he hid his MAGA hat, fearing that it may lead to threats and verbal abuse.

“I had my MAGA hat on campus and had to hide it in worry of being threatened or targeted with speech or allegations again by another student. I attended the end of the event to see that they had multiple students performing acts such as rapping, poems, singing that were directed towards the current administration and people who either support or follow the current president/administration. Some of the topics included some of the misinformation about people like me (Trump supporters)," he said.

Community Section

Welcome to the beta of the new LaCorte News community section! As sites like Facebook and Twitter continue to tighten their rules on what you are and aren't allowed to say, it's getting harder to find a place where you can post and discuss controversial topics without fear of censorship. We're hoping LaCorte News can become that place!

It's still a "closed beta" while we finish building everything, but once it's complete, anyone with an account will be able to post any type of content they want. It won't just be news, so make sure to click the tags and press thumbs up or thumbs down to see more or less of different types of posts.
