Despite the headlines, this was a record-breaking year for female Oscar nominees

The top results of a quick Google search for the Oscar 2020 female nominations show a long list of media articles mainly highlighting the fact that no woman was nominated this year for Best Director.

All of these outlets noted that only five women have been nominated for Best Director in the history of the Academy Awards. They, along with critics on social media, took issue with the snubbing of Greta Gerwig, the director of "Little Women," which was nominated this year for Best Picture.

The Academy is no stranger to criticism for lack of diversity. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite went viral in 2015 and 2016 because no people of color were nominated for the "Best Leading" or "Supporting Actor" categories, even prompting an investigation by American Civil Liberties Union into Hollywood's hiring practices when it comes to female directors.

But despite the headlines, this year's number of female nominees is record-breaking. The Wrap reports that 31.1% of all nominees are female, a percentage that has been steadily growing in recent years. Out of 209 individual nominees for Oscars in all competitive categories in film, with the exception of Best International Film, 65 are women. In 2016, just 22.7% of nominees were women, and the number of female nominees has gone up each year.

Nine of the 24 nominated producers for Best Picture are female. Last year, there were only five out of 25 nominees and eight in 2017 out of 30 nominees.

Hildur Guðnadóttir, the composer for “Joker" is just the seventh woman to receive a nomination for that category and Emma Tillinger Koskoff was nominated as a producer for both “The Irishman” and “Joker." There were also more women nominated in the Best Costume Design and Best Documentary Short Subject categories, among others.
