Dude, stop saying “hey guys”

Dude, stop saying “hey guys”

By

In a recent video released by NowThis News, producer Foluké Tuakli argues people should no longer say "hey guys," claiming that it ignores women and gender-non-conforming individuals.

In the video, Tuakli explains the history of the word and how over time, it became a generic term for men. Tuakli pushes back against claims that "hey guys" is gender-neutral, saying that when a person uses it to address a mixed-gender/non-gender group, that individual is actually addressing the men only, disregarding everyone else, which might hurt their feelings.

Recurring theme: Tuakli is far from being the only one that has labeled the phrase as a male default term. In 2015,

"I realized that my knee-jerk response ('It doesn't seem like that big a deal to me, personally, and changing would require effort on my part and that's hard and tiring') is nothing more than a very typical lazy excuse for avoiding the tiny tweaks to our lives that can, as a whole, make society more equal. Now I'm convinced that "guys" — unless we are actually addressing a group of guys — has got to go," wrote

In a piece published by The Atlantic last year, Joe Pinsker described the term "hey guys" as "a symbol of exclusion." Recently, at the annual meeting of the Democratic Socialists of America, a member of the audience objected to the use of the word "guys" in a video that went viral.

The media, in recent years, has been adapting several new changes in language, prompting questions about how far they are willing to go to accommodate everyone's feelings. Several months ago, The Guardian announced it would change its style guide to "more accurately describe the environmental crises facing the world." This included using phrases such as "climate crisis" instead of "climate change" and “climate skeptic” for “climate science denier. Increasingly, outlets also refer to those who used to be called illegal immigrants as "undocumented workers" or "migrants."

The argument: "This purposeful restructuring of language is meant to be a purposeful restructuring of your brain. The goal is not only to change what you say for the benefit of others but to change what you think. The idea is to consciously reorganize your thought process to align with specific ideologies so that you think of the ideology before your brain actually forms any free thoughts," write the Post Millenial's Libby Emmons and Barrett Wilson.
