Ellen DeGeneres defends her friendship with George W. Bush: ‘It’s OK we’re different’

By

On Monday, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres talked about the social media backlash she received for appearing next to former President George W. Bush at a football game.

During her monologue, DeGeneres told the audience that she and her wife Portia de Rossi were invited to a Dallas Cowboys game by Charlotte Jones, daughter of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. She was seen sitting next to Bush and faced heavy criticism on Twitter for appearing alongside him. "People were upset," DeGeneres said. "They thought, why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president? ... A lot of people were mad. And they did what people do when they're mad ... they tweet."

The comedian then read one tweet she did like, "Ellen and George Bush together makes me have faith in America again."

"Here's the thing: I'm friends with George Bush. In fact, I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have," DeGeneres said. "We're all different and I think that we've forgotten that that's okay that we're all different ... but just because I don't agree with someone on everything doesn't mean that I'm not going to be friends with them."

"When I say, 'Be kind to one another,' I don't mean only the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone. Doesn't matter."

Community Section

Welcome to the beta of the new LaCorte News community section! As sites like Facebook and Twitter continue to tighten their rules on what you are and aren't allowed to say, it's getting harder to find a place where you can post and discuss controversial topics without fear of censorship. We're hoping LaCorte News can become that place!

It's still a "closed beta" while we finish building everything, but once it's complete, anyone with an account will be able to post any type of content they want. It won't just be news, so make sure to click the tags and press thumbs up or thumbs down to see more or less of different types of posts.

If you see any problems or have any suggestions, hit us up at contact@lacortenews.com. Enjoy!
