New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will receive an Emmy Award for his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Emmy Awards announced on Friday
The award: The Academy said the Democrat governor is being awarded its Founder’s Award “in recognition of his leadership during the Covid19 pandemic & his masterful use of TV to inform & calm people around the world.”
The Founder’s Award is granted to an individual or organization that “crosses cultural boundaries to touch our common humanity” and some earlier recipients include former Vice President Al Gore, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg.
“The Governor’s 111 daily briefings worked so well because he effectively created television shows, with characters, plot lines, and stories of success and failure,” International Academy President & CEO, Bruce Paisner said in a statement, according to Fox News.
“People around the world tuned in to find out what was going on, and New York tough became a symbol of the determination to fight back,” he added.
The Academy said Cuomo’s 111 consecutive days of daily press briefings on the state of the pandemic over the summer were followed by a total of 59 million viewers, CBS News reported.
The announcement of the award sparked a flurry of critical responses on Twitter, with some critics pointing to Cuomo’s failed nursing home policy that led to thousands of deaths across the state.
Some of the reactions: “This is shameful,” responded “The View” co-host Meghan McCain.
“Andrew Cuomo deserves to be on trial for the elderly people his nursing home order directly murdered. Instead, he’s getting an Emmy,” said The Federalist publisher Ben Domenech.
“if we’re lucky, Andrew Cuomo will receive a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in ending suffering in New York’s nursing homes,” wrote Washington Examiner’s Siraj Hashmi.
“I am beginning to think most of our society’s ‘awards’ aren’t really offered in recognition of specific acts of excellence anymore,” wrote MSNBC contributor Noah Rothman.
“This award makes sense because Cuomo isn’t actually a competent, empathic Governor — he just plays one on TV,” tweeted progressive activist Max Berger.
“Please stay tuned through the 18 hour ‘In Memoriam’ segment,” reacted conservative commentator David Burge.
“This is Obama Nobel Prize stuff,” wrote Daily Beast politics editor Sam Stein.
“A masterful use of television, indeed,” wrote Daily Caller investigative reporter Andrew Kerr above a picture of the governor and his younger brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, cracking jokes about the governor’s nose in the middle of the nursing home crisis.
