Instagram takes down photo of women shooting at gun range

Instagram has removed a photo of two women shooting at a gun range, reportedly because the photo violated the company’s “violence or dangerous organization guidelines.”

The photo, first posted in 2018, features Infowars reporter Millie Weaver and journalist and gun rights activist Kaitlin Bennett firing handguns at an open gun range.

Instagram's message: “We removed your post because it goes against our Community Guidelines. We created these guidelines to support and protect our community on Instagram. Post removed for violence or dangerous organizations.”

Instagram's community guidelines, however, do not mention “dangerous organizations” but rather say that "It’s never OK to encourage violence" and that "Sharing graphic images for sadistic pleasure or to glorify violence is never allowed."

When it comes to newsworthy events "we encourage you to caption your photo with a warning about graphic violence" and "we may remove videos of intense, graphic violence," the rules say.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, recently updated the “Dangerous individuals and Organizations” section, and this update could be the reason Instagram removed the photo. The crackdown is part of Facebook's broader plan to address the possible sharing of live shooter videos on its platform, which also includes using body cameras during police training exercises to teach its AI systems to detect violent content.

Facebook received widespread criticism following the Christchurch, New Zealand shooting in March of this year when a far-right gunman recorded the heinous crime and posted the footage to Facebook.
