Never Forget? Look Around. We already have

Any American who can remember what happened 18 years ago has probably spent some time since then asking what we have learned.

We found out that America, inarguably the most generous and idealistic empire ever to exist, is also deeply hated. That came as a shock to many people in 2001. In 2019, the even bigger shock is that so many America-haters are Americans.

About the only positive thing that happened on Sept. 11, 2001 was that it temporarily united us. We were, for a brief shining moment, neither liberals nor conservatives, black nor white, straight nor gay. We found – re-found really – the common ground that we had come to take for granted. We put aside party and prejudice, self-identity and self-interest, and stood together.

It was too much to hope that it would last. Our military revenge ventures in Afghanistan, and to a larger degree, Iraq, allowed our political popinjays on both sides of the aisle to start sounding off anew, to resume dialing for dollars, to villainize anyone with ideas that didn’t conform to their vision of the Land of the Free.

And, because the proverbial fish stinks from the head down, citizens who weren’t fixtures on cable news took a cue from the talking heads they had elected, and began to bitch and moan about each other, and our shared good fortune to live here. America is unfair, un-free, racist, sexist, xenophobic. It must all be uprooted, torn down, rebuilt -- but only in the way that I want it to be.

The maniacs in the planes 18 years ago hoped by giving their lives to bring America low. They failed, but as long as we accept our current national hate-fest as a substitute for civil discourse, we are doing the job for them.
