Newsweek has fired the reporter behind the story on President Trump's Thanksgiving plans that initially didn't include his surprise visit to Afghanistan.

How we got here: Newsweek's story, written by reporter Jessica Kwong, was published Thursday morning before it was revealed that the president traveled to Afghanistan to visit US troops. The headline was then changed from "How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and more" to "How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and surprising U.S. troops in Afghanistan," as we reported at LaCorte News and the story was updated.

The trip to Afghanistan was kept secret for security reasons and only a handful of White House aides knew about it. The change, however, came hours after news of Trump's trip surfaced.

President Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr., both reacted to the story on Twitter. Other users also criticized the piece as misleading.

Newsweek's response: “Newsweek investigated the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan. The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action," a Newsweek representative told the Washington Examiner.

The reporter, Kwong, said it was an "honest mistake," but Trump Jr. said she only seized an opportunity to slam the president and that her actions are a nod of a pattern of media bias against the president.

In a separate interview with the news outlet, she said the story was assigned to her in advance and that she filed it to her editor on Wednesday, before the president's visit became public. When news about the visit broke, the editor gave the story to another reporter but didn't immediately update Kwong's story.
