Poll: Nearly all Americans “troubled” by the current state of the media

The story: Of the 1,010 respondents questioned in the survey by Bospar, in collaboration with Propeller Insights, over 95% are troubled by the current state of media. 53% of those who responded pointed to “reports on fake news,” 49% to "reports on fake news," and 48% to “lying spokespeople” as key factors for their concern with the current state of the media.

Other factors contributing to their distrust of media include “celebrity opinions,” left and right-wing agendas, and reporting of so-called “blind items.”

Sixty-seven percent of the respondents believed that ethics in journalism will worsen in the 2020 election.

Forty percent of respondents said they considered local papers and journalists the most ethical while 23% considered local TV reporters and anchors as most ethical; 22% said they trusted national print and online journalists, compared to the 15% who said they considered national TV anchors and reporters as the most trustworthy. The results of the study come ahead of the upcoming Bospar-organized Ethics in Media Panel with the San Francisco Chapter of Public Relations Society of America and the San Francisco Press Club.

“If ever there was a time for an in-depth discussion about ethics in the media, it’s now,” said James Ennis Kirkland, president of the San Francisco Press Club, according to The Wrap.

This isn't the first time a poll has been conducted to evaluate citizens' trust in the media. In May, President Trump's Make America Great Again Committee launched a “media accountability survey,” which was sponsored by the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee.

“The media loves to pretend they’re unbiased, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” an email sent to inboxes around the country read. “Liberal propaganda machines have used every possible tactic to slander, undermine, and insult the President as he fights to put AMERICA FIRST.”

Community Section

Welcome to the beta of the new LaCorte News community section! As sites like Facebook and Twitter continue to tighten their rules on what you are and aren't allowed to say, it's getting harder to find a place where you can post and discuss controversial topics without fear of censorship. We're hoping LaCorte News can become that place!

It's still a "closed beta" while we finish building everything, but once it's complete, anyone with an account will be able to post any type of content they want. It won't just be news, so make sure to click the tags and press thumbs up or thumbs down to see more or less of different types of posts.

If you see any problems or have any suggestions, hit us up at contact@lacortenews.com. Enjoy!
