Professor blames Trump and racism for black women’s overweight issues

By

A Rutgers University professor linked President Trump's policies and racism in the U.S. to African American women's obesity issues during an appearance on "Black Women OWN the Conversation” on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

The story: Brittney Cooper, a gender studies professor, argued that the lack of access to necessary health care and the stress black women experience because of discrimination affects their metabolism and enhances the struggles they face when trying to lose weight.

“I hate when people talk about Black women being obese. I hate it because it becomes a way to blame us for a set of conditions that we didn’t create. We are living in the Trump era. And look, those policies kill our people," said Cooper.

"You can’t get access to good health care, good insurance. It's literally that the racism that you're experiencing and the struggle to make ends meet actually means the diet don't work for you the same," she added.

In detail: Cooper told Campus Reform that she was citing a 1990 research and denied blaming the current administration's policies.

“I wasn’t making an argument about Trump admin policies and weight. Dr. Arline Geronimus’ research from the 1990s argues pretty convincingly that black women have physiological stress responses to racial stimuli and this affects our long term health. I was citing this body of work and the president’s status as a racially polarizing figure that contributes to issues of racial stress for people of color," she said.
