Trump campaign calls out Dem candidate Tom Steyer for claiming Trump “forgot” to buy ‘Keep America Great’ web domain

Media outlets Politico and The Hill were quick to report on Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer's purchasing of the domain of a website with Trump's campaign slogan but downplayed the fact that the domain for the website has been owned by anti-Trump trolls for over four years.

The story: Steyer announced Monday that he bought the domain for the "Keep America Great” website, claiming the Trump campaign "forgot" buy the domain.

"Trump’s campaign prides itself on hoarding websites of political opponents, but they forgot to pick up the URL for their signature re-election slogan, 'Keep America Great,'" Steyer's campaign said Monday.

Now, visitors to the website are redirected to a page calling Trump a "fraud and a failure" and touting Steyer.

Politico and The Hill, however, downplayed the history of the site, which has been run by anti-Trump activists for years.

The site was first launched on June 25, 2015, nine days after Trump formally announced his bid for the White House on June 16, 2015. The Trump campaign officially announced the “Keep America Great” in early 2017, over a year after the domain was first launched.

The Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh called out Steyer for "lying about the availability of this website."

“Tom Steyer is lying about the availability of this website and he knows it. The site was created in 2015, well before the election of 2016, and has been a Trump-hating website for more than four years," said Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh.

An archived version of the website shows it has been run by Trump opponents from as early as 2016.

“We are just a couple of regular Americans who are fed up with the state of our politics,” the 2016 website read. “Join us to spread awareness and start a serious conversation about the future of America, and most importantly, Stop Donald Trump!”

A spokesperson for Steyer’s campaign said in a statement to The Hill that the campaign “purchased the domain two weeks ago without the help of Russia because it's important to tell the truth about Donald Trump's record of bankrupting businesses.”
