Twitter suddenly changes Hong Kong’s geotag to ‘Hong Kong SAR China’

By

Twitter recently renamed what it usually refers to as Hong Kong to Hong Kong SAR China as a trending location, leaving some users surprised. The official name for Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (Hong Kong SAR).

Journalist Alan Wong noticed the change on Twitter. Users demanded that Twitter give an explanation for the change.

Some Twitter users shared that China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, whose independence China doesn't recognize, have all been removed from the worldwide setting. Others noted that Hong Kong wasn't on the list at all; it appears that Twitter just now decided to introduce it under the official, China-approved name. Commenters accused the social network of accommodating China, despite the fact that Twitter has been banned from China for a while now, Reclaim The Net reports.

This controversial name change takes place after months of protests in Hong Kong, originally caused by an extradition agreement between the autonomous territory and mainland China.
