How we got here: The game in question was the one between LSU and Clemson that took place in Lousiana, New Orleans. The president and first lady Melania Trump were greeted with cheers when they arrived, with crowds chanting “USA, USA" and  “Four more years," reports the Associated Press.

“It’ll be a great game. It’ll be something that a lot of people want to see,” the president told reporters before leaving the White House.

The video of Vaughn seated next to the pair was posted on Twitter by journalist Timothy Burk. It showed Vaughn shaking hands with the president having a conversation with him, while the rest of the stadium sang "Sweet Caroline."

The backlash was swift with Vaughn trending on Twitter shortly after the video was posted and critics slammed the actor, who identifies as a libertarian, for being nice to the president. Some took advantage of the opportunity to lambaste the president as well.

"Sad. Vince Vaughn is one of my favorites. I always knew he was Republican but this, so gross. I don't need a Wedding Crashers sequel anymore," one user wrote.

Others, however, shot back at the critics and mocked their reaction.

Worth noting: In a similar fashion, Elle DeGeneres received some negative attention after she was seen laughing with former President George W. Bush at a Dallas Cowboys game in October 2019."People were upset," and "they thought, why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president?" DeGeneres said at the time. "We're all different. And I think that we've forgotten that that's OK that we're all different."
